The Panic Attack Checklist

Why Do I Need A List?

Good question.  Answer:
Because it will show you how to control the panic instead of the panic controlling you.
Because the next time you have one, you will know what to do and therefore, will not be as afraid.
Because not being afraid of the next one is the hardest part of overcoming panic attacks. The peak point.

It should be noted that before using this list, you need to always go to your doctor and get a full checkup.  Blood work, xrays and complete allergy tests. Get the works. Make sure there is nothing detectably wrong with you at all. See a psychic (not a medium-there's a difference) if it makes you feel better.  Chances are greater than not that  you are only experiencing panic attacks or the ailment is not serious enough to worry about for now. And while this checklist is to help you cope with it, not a cure, that doesn't mean there isn't a cure out there.  (Snacking on almonds and tomato juice is a good start towards a cure. So is supplementing with magnesium.)

The Onset

So, here we go!  For whatever reason, you are now feeling "off." You may be wringing your hands.  You might notice-or people around you are noticing- you are rocking back and forth in your seat (anxiety.)  You may be slinging your foot back and forth faster than that can shakes at the paint mixer in Walmart.  You might suddenly get itchy all over (classic allergy symptom, btw.) You may find you can't breathe as easy as you did before. (Another hint it may be allergy triggered.)  You might get dizzy or "whoozy."  This is the onset of a panic attack. Before it gets full blown, you can try this checklist of things to do to offset the major stuff quickly.

The Checklist

1)  First and foremost, if you believe in God:  Pray.  Rebuke this sucker in the Name of Jesus before it goes any further.  Do it with authority because it isn't by your authority, it is by His authority.  And we all KNOW He has the authority over this little speed bump in life. Remember, God and his angels are all around you all the time.  That in itself should bring some comfort.

2)  Do the breathing technique that all of us should be familiar with by now:  Deep breath in to the count of two Mississippi's and release to the count of four Mississippi's.  This has been proven to slow the heart rate in countless studies across the nation.  So if you are worried about having a heart attack, this will help stop that fear right off the bat. Do this until you can complete a sentence in a calm and collected manner.  You should be able to give your name and date of birth without stuttering, being short of breathe or crying.

3) Grab a cold something (doesn't matter what as long as it doesn't leak on you once it has thawed) from the freezer or buy something frozen from a nearby store.  Even a cold pop can from the vending machine will work temporarily.  Put it on the soft spot of your throat where the collar bones meet.  This will help cool that area that is causing the choking sensation you are most likely experiencing.  It will also help your breathing.  (Ever wonder why it is so cold in a doctor's office?)  For some reason health issues leave in the presence of colder temperatures.  This is especially true if it's a heat wave outside or you have been exercising, doing strenuous activities of any kind or are angry about something.  Even better is to step into a cold room somewhere if you can.  Turn on the air conditioning.  You get the point. Get cold.  Close and cover your eyes. Lay down on your back, if possible, with your knees up. Stay cold for at least 20 to 30 minutes. Which brings me to number four. Start your timing now.

4) Stay absolutely still for at least 20 minutes. (During the same time as number 3.) This will give you an opportunity to relax.  Still your mind. Take a break.  Renew yourself.  It doesn't matter if you're at work and there are a thousand and one things to do.  You can get back to it when you are feeling better.  Better to deal with this now like this than have to be rushed to the hospital because it got out of control and made you fear another one down the road.  The work isn't going anywhere. If you can't get your mind off of work or what's bothering you, try some of these mental distraction ideas:
     a) Count backwards in 3's from 100.  If you mess up start back at one.
     b) Ask yourself what is the best vacation you could ever take?  Then begin laying out the plans for it. (Unless that sort of thing stresses you out--it does me.)  How many rooms?  What amenities? Would you fly there or drive or take a train or ship? Would you go sight seeing?  Would you take a planned tour while you are there or wing it? If a beach, what drink will you order as you lay by the ocean soaking up the sun?  Imagine yourself there right now. What's the color of your bathing suit.
     c) Is there a song you love?  Sing it to yourself.  Or play it if you can.  It has been clinically proven that people automatically relax when they hear a familiar song come on the radio.  This is can also be a song/sound that you have previously practiced meditation or relaxation with. (As you should be doing on a daily basis, if anything, so that you can play it during an attack to bring you back down.)
     d) Do  you have a  mantra or affirmation statement that calms you?  Try to memorize a verse from the Bible.  Try repeating it during an attack and watch what happens.
     e) If you can get your hands on something that has the color turquoise or cyan green on it, looking at it or mentally visualizing it has been shown to help mental patients and patients in duress.  That's why it is the chosen color for surgeons and doctors. (Surrounding yourself with these two colors are a huge help to visually bring you down from an attack before one even begins.)
     f) Laughter.  If you can think of anything that makes you laugh, that would be great.  If not, try to keep a cd, dvd, or recorded show on hand to entertain you when you need it.  Simply watching a funny movie may be all you need to get out of the frame of thought, situation, or depressive mood that brought you to a panic attack in the first place.

Keep in mind that I am not saying panic attacks are only caused by mental things.  They can be brought on by so many things, mostly physical.  But the way we cope with them until we find out what is causing them can make all the difference in how well we come out of the situation.  Plus, most doctors are so trained to believe they are brought on my mental disorders they rarely take the time to fully evaluate you in rural areas.

5) If step four didn't bring you out of it because you just can't seem to calm down., exercise can help to burn up some adrenaline. And if you are on medications such as Xanax or Ativan, after this step would be  the time to take it.  (Xanax and Ativan, if taken regularly is highly addictive no matter what they say.  If you take it as a daily regime and get hit with a panic attack anyway, use it as a last resort only to prevent any further addiction.) But be warned, stay away from anything high impact such as running.  While running is a good idea for physical fitness, now is not the time to get your heart rate up any higher than it already is.  Exercises that require strength and core stabilization are best, preferably with a set of dumbbells or a barbell with weights just heavy enough to make you see your muscles contracting when you work them. Lifting weights is also a good way to work off any frustrations.  (Don't be afraid to get loud here, it's therapeutic.) Slow and controlled movements should be your goal.  My favorites are arm curls, clean and jerks, flutter kicks, oblique barbell twists, single arm dumbell fly, push ups, Dumbbell Stiff Leg Deadlifts, dumbbell bench press, standing two arm dumbbell presses, laying down four count leg lifts.  (Thank you Shape Fit for all the demonstration tutorials!!!)

Tips and Tricks

That's it, my friend !  If you haven't calmed down by now, you were not having a panic attack.  You were hyped up on something chemical. Even with that, the exercises should have burned it up.  And guess what, after step 2 you probably was not having a heart attack (as most people feel they are) or any other serious ailment.  It was just a panic attack or anxiety attack.  The first three steps work well with migraines as well, which are forms of panic and anxiety in most cases.

It is a good idea to be prepared beforehand for the onset of a panic attack.  Having the materials around you will make it easier to deal with it.

I strongly recommend the following items for anyone suffering panic attacks:

1)  Think Right Now for panic and anxiety.  http://www.thinkrightnow.com/audios/audiopananx.asp

2) Get a chest pillow to sleep with nightly. You can use the heart shaped kind or a large pillow to place between your breasts or chest and your arms at night. The goal is to make sure you are not squishing your chest together at night so as not to aggravate the vedic nerve. The vedic nerve is a nerve that runs down your chest and cause all kinds of havoc from vomiting in cold or hot temperatures to other serious ailments.  It is completely treatable, but doctors rarely correctly diagnose problems with this nerve for some reason.

3) If you are put on nerve pills such as Xanax or Ativan and ordered to take them three times a day, don't.  Take them only if you need them.  If you find you need them everyday, take one a day and then more ONLY if you have another panic attack and this checklist fails. Do this at your own risk, of course.  But it is my opinion to do it because that medicine is highly addictive.  Then after you are addicted to it, you become some sort of dirty word in your doctor's office and are going to eventually have to come off of this medicine.

4) Exercise regularly everyday.  At least 30 minutes a day of continuous exercise.  You don't have to run a marathon., but do get moving.  It will help regulate serotonin levels, lower blood pressure, and increase oxygen in the body.  Plus if you walk in a serene area such as a park or by a lake,  you get the added bonus of connecting with nature to help the renewal of your spirit and psyche.

5) Avoid common triggers for allergies, regardless of what your tests say.  Chocolate, sugary foods, caffeine, deep fried foods (ok, that's not an allergy food, you just shouldn't eat them,) peanuts, wheat, oatmeal, barley, rye and msg.  Avoid processed foods, sugar substitutes, otc NSAIDS because of adverse reactions and "sensitivities" (not allergies legally) you may not be aware about.

Try to include more vegetables in the place of these foods and be sure to drink plenty of water everyday.  Salads done right act as natural sedatives.

6) Keep a picture or item that induces peace and calm with you to pull out when you need a good mental break.

7) Keep a journal.  Journaling lets you keep track of when you are getting your attacks and therefore an invaluable tool to discovering what is your "trigger."  It also lets you know what helped you last time you had an attack.

8) Wear silver if possible.  It has a chemical reaction with the human body that creates a sedative effect without side effects of drugs.

9) Surround yourself with any color that calms you. Most react well with cyan green or turquoise.  Those colors have a cooling effect on the body and have been studied too many times to count, all proving their efficacy.

10) Keep people out of your life that are causing you trouble if you can.  There is no need to put added stress on yourself at this time if it isn't absolutely necessary.

11) Delegate chores.  You don't have to do everything.  Allow others the chance to take care of some responsibilities and prove themselves worthy too.  It helps children become responsible adults and grown ups to be a helping hand and good friend to you.

12) Don't shun advice from others who are willing to offer it.  So what if they don't all know what they are talking about.  Who cares? They are trying to be a friend to you when they offer you advice.  They are not trying to judge you or be superior to you.  Let the love in !!!!

13) Go to church regularly and have them pray for you often.  That's what the church does.  We pray for each other and support each other in the time of need.

14) Spend time with family and friends as often as possible.  Do your hobby thing that you love.  The idea is to be happy.  Have some happy time just for you everyday.  What makes you happy is up to you.

Thanks for reading.  All this information has been personally tried and found to be true.  I wish you luck and many, many peaceful nights.

Twitter

What is it?

From the makers: "Twitter is a real-time information network that connects you to the latest information about what you find interesting. Simply find the public streams you find most compelling and follow the conversations."

Founded in 2006, by Jack Dorsey, Twitter is a social mart of sorts.  You pick who you will "follow" and read their daily (sometimes a lot more) "tweets."  You can post links to another website or blog spot if you wish to show pictures or elaborate stories to more than is allowed by Twitter.  You are only allowed to post 140 characters per tweet for the free version.  You can buy upgrades that allow more characters per tweet. Just like all the other social webs on the world wide web, the people there tend to come from all walks of life. And like Facebook, you can get the tweets sent to your mobile.

What makes it different from the others?

Unlike other social networking sites, the people on Twitter tend to be more adults and professionals. It is targeted information.  And I like how we don't have to tip toe around the kiddies.  I prefer more serious conversations like what's available on Twitter.  I particularly like that no one seems so "stuck up" on Twitter. Even the rich, famous, and notorious get on Twitter and speak their minds.  You know what?  If you don't like what they have to say, you don't have to follow them.  If you don't follow them then you don't have to hear what all they say all the time unless they directly intend for you to by putting your name in the tweet itself. You can also choose which tweets get sent to your mobile, meaning you only get the ones that are really important to you.  It is this author's opinion that it this reason for Twitter's huge success.  The ease and feel of the site makes using Twitter friendly and fun.

I am on Twitter!

My name on Twitter is lottogirly.  I like to talk numbers with anyone who is interested.  Join me by clicking the link on the left.

Not Eating After Dark: A Diet Review

No Eating After Dark

We have all heard our parents say it, "Don't eat after 6:30pm"  or "Don't eat after 5:00 pm."  Whichever time they told you, the point they were striving for was to get you to not eat during the night hours (whether they knew it or not!)

I did this for the better part of my life.  Then about 5 years into my marriage I discovered I would feel a little better if I ate something before bedtime and could sleep better.   At the time, it was true because I was only eating one meal a day and swallowing down over a pot of coffee and a twelve pack of Diet Coke a day.  Skinny and athletic most of my life, my body revolted with weight gain and migraines-sometimes daily for weeks at a time- when I punished my body this way.  I would have been better off starving than to eat so many carbs and junk food at night.  Because  really, who cooks a  healthy dinner at 11pm ?  Not me.  Not when I have already cleaned up my kitchen from my dinner for four and put the kiddies to bed.  Needless to say, I put on weight.  A lot of weight.

Research to back it up:

After reading about some new research done by Ohio State,  where they fed mice the same thing for eight weeks but exposed one control group to a dim light during sleep hours., I decided to try not eating after dark.   I loved that this study thought it out enough to put a control group that was restricted to eating only during normal hours yet still only eating the same amount of food the others were eating, showing us that we can do this to not gain any weight.  I also love that they proved the dim light was causing the mice to eat at an inappropriate time for their metabolism.  The weight gain came regardless of the fact that all the mice ate the same amount of food and kept the same activity level.  And the weight gain began in week one of the study!!!!  Read that again...The weight gain began in week one of the study!!!!   Those are pretty positive results in my book.   Read the research from the link above.  It is an awesome find, IMO.   And I am certainly glad the researchers published their findings for us to know about it.

The Challenge:

I decided to begin this challenge to see if it would work on me.  I am a 40 year old mother of two who has been exercising, dieting and starving to try to lose weight.  I have tried gym memberships, weight loss shakes ( which did work, btw, but I have a bad reaction to them, regardless of which ones I chose,) green tea ( again, works, but caused headaches and absolutely not for those who have panic attacks,) and maintaining an hour or more of steady activity daily while counting calories (didn't work at all!)  I have tried portion control, low carb diets, fasting diets ( only one that worked was the one where I skipped dinner altogether---which included not eating after dark.)   I have tried going solely nutritious and working out such as is advocated by the famed Jillian Michaels. The scale hasn't  budged.  I have tried the Belly Fat Cure by Jorge Cruise where sugar and carbs are eaten but restricted along with portion control and exercises.  Again, the scale didn't budge.  Don't worry, I will be doing reviews for all of these programs soon.  Now, why not try this?

What you should know about me?  I don't drink coffee, tea or soda pops.  No, not even the diet ones. I generally only drink bottled water, Gatorade (if I am exercising regularly and only if I start to feel dehydrated,) and the occasional milkshake (which, because of the milk, I limit too.)   I am wheat gluten intolerant so I try to limit my intake of that.  Too much sugar makes me hyper anyway so if I do eat it, I have to exercise or panic out.... I do not eat pork or shell fish in any form.  I try to eat kosher but sometimes have to settle with what my budget will allow.  I favor fresh  fruits, vegetables and meat if I can afford it.

My strategy:

Now, that all said, I will  not be watching my calories on this diet test.  But I will not be gorging out on every meal either.  I will try to stop eating when I start to feel full or satiated.  I will be eating some junk foods during this test.   I feel this will not be a proper test if I try to alter my lifestyle any way at all.  And, normally, I do enjoy a treat here and there but generally not every day.  (Although I have for the past two weeks, for which I will be going back to "here and there" mode.  And that alone, could cause a drop in weight.)  I will be doing 30 minutes on my treadmill or walking outdoors when I can.  Regardless of what I do, if stopping eating after dark and keeping the lights away from me at night do what the research says it will, I should shed some pounds.  Right? Notice that an important part of this study was the dim light at night on the group that gained the weight. So, no lights on for a solid 8 hours a night.  Very important !!!!  For me, that means lights out 10 pm, regardless of whether I am sleepy or not, which will require help from my family.

Beginning date for the test :  October 17th, 2010.
End date for the test :  October 24th, 2010   where normal eating will begin on the following day.

I will update this post when I am finished, hopefully with pictures.

Why not try it with me and share your experience here?

The Journal:
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Day one:
*********************************
My husband and family agreed to help me out with this.  So here is how day one went  and what I had to eat.  I ate:

  •  for breakfast at 6 am:
  • 20 oz glass of orange juice with pulp
  • 1 Grande's biscuit
  •  snack:
  •  2 bars of a Kit Kat
  • for lunch at 11am:
  • Half of a bowl ( about an 8 oz cup) of potato, broccoli and cheese chowder
  • 20 oz bottle of water
  • for dinner at 5 pm:
  • Half of a bowl of Hamburger Helper's Cheeseburger Mac
  • 1/2 cup of spinach
  • 20 oz bottle of water
  • snack:
  • 1 Nutty Buddy Ice Cream Cone
  • no category
  • 2  20 oz bottles of water

I walked on my treadmill for 30 minutes around 8pm.   Then promptly at 10pm me and my hubby were in our bed with all the lights and electronics cut off.  With the exception of a midnight trip to the bathroom, I saw no light for a solid 8  hours.  My husband slept great!  I couldn't sleep.  I don't know what time it was when I went to sleep, but I know it had to be getting close to time to get up because I heard the morning rush beginning on the road right outside my window.

        ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
        Day two:
        *******************************************
Due to the lack of sleep from last night, I took a very short (maybe one hour) nap after I ate breakfast this morning.

        •  for breakfast at 6 am:
        • 8 oz glass of orange juice with pulp
        • 1 large scrambled egg
        • 1 cup breakfast pepper gravy
        • 1 cup hashed browned potatoes
        • 1 20 oz bottle of water
        • for lunch at 1 pm:
        • 1 can Progresso Chicken and Wild Rice Soup (low sodium)
        • 1 20 oz bottle of water
Update:  I just weighed myself, and I have actually gained 1.6 pounds overnight.  Lets see what happens tonight. And I am dog tired!!  Can't wait for bed tonight.

          • Snack:
          • 1 tblsp of peanut butter
          • 1 20 oz bottle of water
          • Dinner at 5pm:
          • 1 homemade 4oz cheeseburger on 2 slices of white bread w/ lett, tom, cucumber
          • 10 homemade deep fried fries w/ cheese
          • 2 tsp of ranch dipping dressing
          • 1 20 oz bottle of water

I know this dinner sounds awful.  It really is as bad and greasy as it gets in my house.  We NEVER deep fry our fries.  We usually bake them ourselves or buy store bought ones and bake them.   I didn't even eat all of what was on my plate.  I was too sleepy.  I just couldn't wait to get to bed.  Once there though, I didn't sleep well again.  I don't know what time it was when I finally drifted off (more like passed out from exhaustion ) but I know it was 4  a.m. when I woke back up.
          /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
          Day three
          ***************************************

          • Breakfast at 7am (after the sun was up):
          • 1 boiled egg
          • 1 20 oz bottled water

          • lunch at 12 pm:
          • 1/2 of a chicken w/ cheese and mayo sandwich on two slices of white bread
          • 1 teaspoon of peanut butter
          • 1 20 oz bottle of water

Update:  I weighed myself again this morning:  I have gained weight again.  Almost a whole pound.  While better than yesterday, if this keeps up, I will have to abandon this test and go back to diet mode to lose the weight I have gained from this experiment.  My aim was to stop the weight gain or actually lose weight.  But I am really not surprised when I look back and see what all I had to eat.  Should have slipped in a salad somewhere there.  But the whole point of this experiment is to see the effects with NORMAL eating.  That means no dieting and watching calories.   You know, this is also giving me a great chance to document how some foods will affect weight gain and loss on a day to day basis.  I am a typical 40 year old mother.  I am the majority of the people who are overweight in this country.  Uh mmmm...... aside from the growing population of obese children.  I really picked a bad week for this experiment.  I am living off a very limited budget this week and have to resort to eating just what is available to me here in the house.  These are foods that are usually here just for exotic snacking and considered a treat more than a meal.  I usually eat much more fruit and veggies.

          • Dinner at 6pm
          • 2 cups pinto beans
          • 1 cup mustard greens
          • 1 cup sourkraut
          • 2 dinner rolls
          • 5 cheesy fries with ranch dressing
          • 1/2 cup 7 layer cake
          • 1 1/2 20 oz bottle of water

          ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
          Day Four

          • 1 20 oz bottle of water

You will have to forgive the layout on this blog post.  For some reason, the spacing isn't cooperating.

End Result:  I gained three pounds!!!!
What a mess! Because it was such a mess, there are no pictures either.  Sorry.   But looking back on what all was eaten......Well, no wonder!  And my activity was less than usual too.  (Could explain the gaining part!)  So now I have to rule this experiment "inconclusive,"  because I ate like a pig.   Or you might consider it contrary to their findings, although, there were no people to compare myself with. My husband and children who agreed to cooperate with me failed miserably.  They ate after dark routinely.  (Making me miserable. I could smell the food from my room. )  If I tried to exercise, I was considered to be ignoring them.  And we were all battling the flu on top of it all.  I'm not making excuses.  That is really what happened.

In short, I have to start counting calories to try to ditch some of the weight I gained during all of this experimenting.    Notice I said "to try" to ditch some weight.  Everywhere on the internet, people swear by counting calories.  That is my next home tested review.  Until then,  I hope I have shed some light on the subject.  (Pun intended. :-))

          Cheers all!

Why The Switch? My First Review

The change from the 91 Challenge to The Review

When I first began the 91 Challenge, I intended to provoke scientific research to study some new findings based on gematria.  I wanted healthy alternatives to the chemotherapy and radiation treatments, the surgical removals and inhumane clinical pokes and prods that torture cancer patients on a daily basis.  I prayed about it often.  But like most divination (and gematria is divination because you can tell the future with it) it provokes greedy ends.  I'm humiliated to admit that I used it to that end and am now paying the price for it in a big way of which I will not mention.  So I have to abandon that avenue and seek other forms of release.  And pray relentlessly that God sees fit to make researchers to find healthy alternatives that work with our bodies instead of against it.  Think foods to eat, lifestyle changes, etc.,   Of course, God does things his own way and it isn't my place to ask why.  It is only my place to obey.  After all, He has our best interest at heart.  So I have deleted previous posts on here to make sure that I have no more to do with it.

We are suppose to turn to Him for what ails us anyway, right?  We are suppose to rely on him.  But know this, God gave the green herb and its seed to heal the nations.  (Rev 22:2 and Gen 1:29-31)  And with that, I would like to refer my serious readers in search of cures to a great blog called "The Healing of a Nation The Hebrew People"  Which is my first review, btw, and a good one at that.

Posted by The COFAH Network Blog, this is a blog full of natural cures.

I just like the whole feel and look of this blog. From the eye catching orange and red colors used in the layout to the presentation of the information.  It is the information for which I have scoped out this blog, btw, and is completely relevant to my own previous findings using gematria.  I like that they completely define the condition before embarking on the cures.  I like that they are presenting natural cures that work with the body.  I like that they give you references to places where you can purchase some of the ingredients they recommend.  And I appreciate their openness to conventional medicines where needed.  Most herbalists and natural healers do not like conventional medicine and will usually scare you to death from seeing the doctor, all the while you are in pain and suffering.  (You know, some of us are not fortunate enough to have natural healers or herbalists available in our area!  Small town U.S.A has NOT got it going on!) It may not seem like they do condone conventional medicine, but they do in fact recommend you seek medical advice along with some of the cures for safety purposes. And they have videos!  Always a nice feature!  That is what I do like.

What I don't like is the fact that they expect us to understand some of the terminology such as "diaphorectic."  What does that mean?

Thank God for Google ;-) But I don't like having to search up words during my research of other things.  It feels like a treasure hunt where one clue leads to another and another and another.... it gets annoying.

As much as I loved the blog, it is wise not to think too much on bad things such as health issues.  The mind needs a little laughter to balance things out :-D
